I think the lowest point of the whole thing was when an old lady overtook me

Nearly three months ago to the day, I ran 10km in aid of Cancer Research and didn’t even make a blog post about it. To be fair, I did go travelling for a month the day after the race and on my return proceeded to move to the countryside and get myself a new job. I like to keep busy.

The medal hangs proudly on my wall… if only because the previous tenants had a thing for hanging about a billion pictures and I have to find a use for the picture hooks somehow, don’t I?

I completed the race in 1 hour 37 minutes (I think, I can’t remember the exact time) and although I didn’t stop once throughout the whole thing, my time was so slow because I was jogging at walking pace next to my friend whose leg decided to give in before we reached the first kilometre.

She did keep telling me to go on and run without her, but I wouldn’t be a friend if I did that, would I? I think the lowest point of the whole thing was when an old lady overtook me at the fifth kilometre. My friend owes me.

Shortly after the race I received an e-mail informing me I could register for next years race if I so wish… and I did. If only to prove to myself I can run the race in good time (and the fact I want another medal!) It’ll be 2012 next year and it’s the closest I’ll ever come to being in the olympics.

So next May will see me returning to London, sans a friend and running at full capacity – that is if I can keep my fitness levels up. Turns out moving to the countryside means having to run up hills, which only causes to increase the mass of my thighs (and my thighs are big enough as it thank you very much.) So I’m not that inspired to train. Not that I can do much running at the moment anyway. I sustained a back injury last year and it appears to have returned.

For the foreseeable future I can be found down the local swimming pool in the hopes I can start running again in the winter time. You know when it’s dark, cold and miserable.

In the mean time, I’ve found a good use for my running trainers.

Logan, the only male in my life who doesn’t judge me on what I look like in the morning (because he knows I’m the one that feeds him) seems to have an affinity with shoes.

I love him more than chocolate, hell I love him more than sex – even when he decides to sleep half on my lap and half on the keyboard as I type this up. The bugger.

Finally, I’d like to give a big thank you to everyone who donated money to my chosen charity, Cancer Research – it means a lot. You saved my conscience by allowing me to give back for once.

Oh and raised money to be spent on research for curing cancer. Together we’ll beat it. Or at least get fit trying.



What’s in my gym bag

Please don’t take this title literally. If I did, my answer would be fuck all. In fact I don’t even have a gym bag. I’m not even a member of a gym anymore.

What’s in my gym bag is a new whenever-I-feel-like-sharing corner of teesee.co.uk in which I bore you with the highs and more often than not, lows of running.

For the past few months now I’ve had the 30th of May circled on my calendar, or at least I would have if I actually owned one. The date is significant because that’s when I stop traffic in London by running on the roads.

I’ve already talked a bit about my rather traumatic history with running, but for the past year now we’ve put our differences aside and so far live in reasonable harmony.

Basically, I run until it hurts but only on the condition it doesn’t kill me. Or ruin my face.

Running away from myself

Not so long ago I mentioned the fact I’d be running the Bupa 10km race next year in aid of Cancer Research. This oh-so-great idea was born into creation one particular evening when my housemate and I were feeling rather inspired. I’m not sure why exactly as we’d spent the entire day sequestered on the sofa whilst eating take-away and watching Come Dine With Me.

At the time it felt like a good idea, I swear.

I’ve been taking “getting fit” seriously since about April (and yes, that’s around the time the ex and I split, go figure) so although I wasn’t unfit when I started running, I found it really difficult to do.

Why?

Plan B-egone

Some time ago I made a Plan B which encapsulated everything I wanted to achieve in the coming year. Yeah. Well I got bored of that and now use it as a moodle, doodle board. And at times when I’m feeling particularly inspired, I scrawl things on it to motivate me.

Things like:

Remember to take the rubbish out.

And

Remove hair from plughole.

If that doesn’t want to get me out of bed in the morning, then nothing will.
